Why Childhood Obesity Matters

Childhood obesity is no longer a “Western problem.” It is now one of the fastest-growing health crises in Africa.

  • According to the World Health Organization (WHO, 2022), 39 million children under 5 years were overweight or obese globally.
  • In Africa, the number of overweight children under 5 has increased by nearly 24% since 2000.
  • In Kenya, research by the Kenya Demographic and Health Survey (KDHS 2022) shows that 5% of children under 5 are overweight—a figure that masks the even higher rates in urban areas.
  • Globally, obese children are five times more likely to become obese adults, facing lifelong risks of diabetes, cardiovascular disease, joint problems, and depression.
